21 REMEMBERINGS

We use our memories to tell our stories, to connect to others, to bear witness and to create our myths. David Kahneman says ‘We don’t choose between experiences, we choose between memories of experiences’. The recall of memories can happen through little things: a photograph, an object, a smell. The memory and the moment of recall of that memory overlap, but are not identical.

Is this a memory? Or a memory of a memory?

In ‘Memory of the Modern’ Matt Keoki Matsuda notes that ‘each memory is many memories.’ In his book he is referring to the collective as well as individual memory. Versions of the past vary and in the process of recording events they structure and change memory over time, with the most powerful voices usually prevailing.

21 Wax Layers investigates the shaded, the changed, the hidden, the dominant.
