21 SHROUDS

Rituals have the power to transform objects, bodily movement or words into significant symbols. Richard Sennett says that through rituals we can choreography gestures, so that they can be repeated and performed again and again. The word shroud originated in 14 century England to describe the clothing used to dress or wrap a corpse prior to burial. It is a practice that has been used for thousands of years and in many different cultures.

Shroud, mound shroud, grave cloth, burial cloth, winding cloth, winding sheet, cerement, chrisom. Take one piece of calico, like a comforting and swaddling sheet, make it dance.

All films shot and edited by Toby Curson.

21 CALICO BALLS
